Puzzle Number One: A Riddle

There are ten books on a bookshelf. Each book has one hundred pages. A bookworm starts on the first page of the first book ( on the right), and eats its way through to the last page of the last book ( on the left). How many pages did it eat? Give me a number and a reason.

( Hint: Use a real bookshelf, it should help. This has a logical answer, so it should make sense.)
